My trip to San Diego
Hey, I am Paula, 18 years old, and I am currently doing with EF Language year as a gap year Between the Abitur and my upcoming studies. I chose the destinations San Diego, Miami and Costa Rica and would like to report on my experience in the first few months. My goal on this trip is to explore the world to get to know as many people from other nations as possible and hopefully to make friendships for life. In addition, I can also improve my language skills.
What I did not expect is that time really flies and I can collect so many different memories that I keep in my heart forever.
700 students from all over the world
For three months I am on that Campus housedon which 700 other students from various nations are also accommodated. I myself am in a room with a Belgian, a French woman and an Italian and immediately took the others to heart.
Of course it is different than at home, but it also has some advantages if you live in a building with so many people. It definitely won't get boring here on the campus. There is always an activity or a conversation somewhere that keeps you busy.
In general, it is also very possible to do something in a large group or simply organize a relaxing game night.
I found a lot of connection in the first few days and new students arrive every week, so everyone can find a group with which time becomes unforgettable!
My top 3 trips so far
1. San Francisco
I have already made a trip to San Francisco with EF, which was incredibly beautiful. The city was very impressive and the many works of art on the streets were particularly impressive. On the first evening we had a lot of free time and were also able to take part in a small walking tour. The highlight was Saturday, because that day we visited all the big sights by bus. Among other things, we were at the Golden Gate Bridge and of course also with Pier 39.
2. Los Angeles
Like many others, we rented a car on a weekend and are after Los Angeles driven. It is super easy to plan and in fact the city is only two hours away from the campus. Because we were there by car, we were able to drive to all sights. These were further apart than expected because Los Angeles is super extensive. There were beautiful photos in front of the Hollywood Sign and Beverly Hills should also have seen when you are in the area. The little trip was really an experience and we had a lot of fun.
3. Universal Studios
Of course, I couldn't miss the big films, such as Harry Potter or the world of Simpsons, live. Since a Halloween Special took place, we were in the studios for the horror night and also experienced simulations of The Purge and all horror films – Which was really creepy, but also really funny. Horror night is really an experience for all Halloween fans, but it is also worth looking behind the scenes of the big films.
My home far from home
Even if I miss my family and friends, but also some other things, the language school quickly became my new home. It took two weeks for me until I really had a new routine, but then I had really arrived and realized that I am not only on vacation, but also stay for a long time.
All friends I found here ensure a feeling of home, even if I am at the other end of the world.
In addition, you deal with your surroundings very differently if you live independently in a foreign environment, which ensures that you are all the better familiar.
My recommendation
Overall, I have already learned a lot and would give everyone a few things about it. If you will soon be a language trip, get involved with all the experiences you can do! Sometimes it also includes stepping out of your own comfort zone – But it's really worth it. Talk to other students and dare to make new contacts, because you don't get the opportunity often. Perhaps this creates a friendship forever and your new Travel Buddy is the person you addressed.
And the most important thing is to enjoy and capture the moments, because you will always look back on the trip.
After all, the photos and memories remain forever!
