Hello, my name is Felicia and I’m currently spending four exciting months with EF in London.
It was clear to me for a long time that I didn’t want to go to university straight away after graduating from high school. After a short research, I was initially overwhelmed by the numerous options and offers. Since one of my greatest passions is traveling, I quickly decided to take a year abroad. However, there are countless organizations to choose from in this area too. Ultimately, EF impressed me the most, especially with its authentic advice. The perfect combination of travel and academic focus as well as 60 years of experience as a leading provider of stays abroad were crucial for me. I chose EF’s intensive four-month program in London, Great Britain.
Arriving in the big city: First impressions and a new home
The preparations for my stay were rather short notice – apart from creating my passport. Points such as writing a packing list and packing the suitcase only happened a few days before departure. In these last few days the excitement and tension slowly increased. I probably only really realized that it was really starting when I was sitting alone on the plane to London.
From the airport I was taken directly to my host family with the EF transfer – an option that I can only recommend to everyone. This saves you the stress of having to catch a suitable train or squeezing yourself into a crowded bus with your suitcase. When we arrived at the host family, the first thing we did was get to know each other and get set up. I lived with a host family throughout my stay. I changed my first host family because of the environment – luckily it was quick and uncomplicated. I was very happy with my second host family. It took me almost an hour to get to school, but the beautiful and quiet residential area was definitely worth it. When staying with a host family, you should definitely be adaptable and able to accept the differences from your own lifestyle and culture.
Insights into lessons at the EF language school
On Monday, the first day, the new students were warmly welcomed by the school staff and provided with the most important information. The placement test also took place as part of this program. We could then choose between a boat, bus or walking tour of London. These activities are a great opportunity to make your first connections! But even if you don’t take advantage of these offers, you’ll get to know your class by the next day at the latest. In the General English courses, the age differences are relatively small, which makes it easier to make contacts. In the spin classes, however, the levels and age groups are mixed, which creates exciting dynamics. I started at level C1.2 and was upgraded to C2.1 after six weeks. The lessons are different than typical English lessons in Germany. The teachers pay much more attention to your individual strengths and weaknesses in order to provide you with the best possible support. Personal interests can also be specifically promoted through spin classes. Examples of such courses include business and entrepreneurship, vocabulary and grammar, but also social media and film making.
Experiencing London: My favorite places and activities
I am and will remain a big fan of London. The city has something to offer for every budget. Almost all museums are free and you only have to pay admission for special exhibitions. The markets are also particularly well-known, especially the Portobello Road Market, where you can find everything from jewelry and clothing to cameras and soap. In Notting Hill I can recommend the scone shop “Cheeky Scone” near the “Notting Hill Gate” underground station.
The city can also be wonderfully discovered through EF’s activities. I’ve mostly taken part in day trips and would highly recommend them to anyone as they’re a great way to visit places you probably wouldn’t consider on your own. It’s also more cost-effective and the activity leaders always have a few insider tips. I can particularly recommend a trip to Oxford or, if you want to travel a little further, to Edinburgh! Another favorite of mine are the musicals. London is known for its many different performances. With EF you get good seats and pay less than with the usual ticket sellers.
Unforgettable experiences with EF
What I will especially miss is the city and the many wonderful acquaintances I was able to make here. I’ve learned so much already! In addition to my improved language skills, I have also become significantly more independent and self-confident and have been able to develop further as a person. I am very grateful to have been able to do this trip and would highly recommend London as a destination to anyone wanting to go abroad.
